A Change for Our Family
Our family has been living in rural Texas for a number of years now. It is okay, but my husband and I are worried about the socialization of our children. Murals Add Pizazz to Downtown Sarasota

The Sarasota Chalk Festival initiated Going Vertical, a city-wide project that infuses cultural expression into overlooked parts of town. A grant was distributed amongst multiple artists to transform exterior walls into canvases.
The Palm Avenue parking garage is the last phase of the project. Walls of the parking deck have been covered in two colorful murals that pay homage to the opera Madame Butterfly. A beautiful Japanese woman smiles sweetly from a sea of butterflies. Her ivory skin is framed by a radiant red parasol. On an adjoining wall, the elevators act as a doorway leading into a garden. Cherry blossom trees are painted in full bloom, their delicate white and pink leaves popping out dramatically against the warm colors of the sunset.
Earlier works in other parts of the city include break dancers, b-boys and ballerinas painted along stairwells and a stunning trick wall that makes a sidewalk look as though it continues through the face of a brick building. (Be careful!) Moody jazz scenes were painted in the natural darkness of alley corners, making what was once a shady place an area with purpose.
It’s amazing what a little bit of artwork can do.
